As Colombia has engaged in multiple free trade agreements in the past two decades, non-mining sectors have not been able to profit as much from international markets yet.
The adoption of new technologies is a way to change this, by making different industries more competitive globally. Examples in Colombia of technology adoption include the innovations in the rice industry, engaging in a Mass Adoption of Technology programme (AMTEC), which promises to make Colombia as competitive as the US in this sector.
Improving technology and making other non-mining industries more competitive will also make the Colombian economy less vulnerable to changes in commodity prices.
